Go Math
We continue working on our final Chapter 11 on 3-dimensional shapes.  Students will have to identify cones, spheres, rectangular prisms (3-dimensional rectangles) and cylinders.  The hardest part of this chapter, aside from the new vocabulary, is when students have to identify the flat face of a shape.  For example, a cube has a square as it's flat face.  A rectangular prism has a square and a rectangle as it's flat face.  A cone has a circle for its flat face and a cylinder has two circles for its flat face.  The other difficult part of this lesson is when students have to identify how many faces these shapes have.  For example, a cube has 6 faces.  Students always forget to count the bottom and/or the top.  Please check your child's homework for these areas.  You can help reinforce what we are teaching each day.  This is a short chapter and we will have our test on Chapter 11 Thursday, May 19th.

Keep practicing reading numbers to 1
20 and writing
numbers to 120, especially 100 - 120.  We tell students that 101 is the same as 1 hundred, 0 tens and 1 one.  113 is the same as 1 hundred, 1 ten and 3 ones.  They are practicing this during calendar math using straws.  When we get 10 straws we bundle them with a rubber band and call it 10.  When we get 10 bundles of 10 straws we will rubber band those and call them 1 hundred.

Keep practicing math facts with your child.  We have flash cards if you need them.  We have four first grade students that have passed all their addition facts and are now working on subtraction.  One of these students is almost done passing all his subtraction facts.  Wow!
