Go Math
We will begin working on Chapter 7 this week:  Using Place Value to Compare Numbers.

Place value is the base of understanding math and this is a very important unit for our first graders.  Make sure they continue to do the practice homework each night.

Students will be practicing greater than and less than.  They will be asked to say a number is greater than or less than another number because there are more tens or more one.  For example, 37 is greater than 15 because 37 has three tens and 15 only has one ten.  Also, 48 is greater than 43 because the tens are the same but 48 has more ones than 43.  Then students will practice mentally adding 10 to a number.  For example, if we have 57 what would be ten more?

Keep practicing reading numbers to 1
20 and writing numbers to 120, especially 100 - 120.  We tell students that 101 is the same as 1 hundred, 0 tens and 1 one.  113 is the same as 1 hundred, 1 ten and 3 ones.  They are practicing this during calendar math using straws.  When we get 10 straws we bundle them with a rubber band and call it 10.  When we got 10 bundles of 10 straws we banded them together and called them 1 hundred (100th day of school).

Keep practicing math facts with your child.  We have flash cards if you need them.
